In my marketing class I learned that because Google's biggest competitor is YouTube, they bought it. I found it interesting because people are now first going to YouTube rather than Google or Yahoo to search for information. Google is also looking into buying Twitter, which to me just seems like they want to be known as an even bigger name than they already are. I say this because Twitter would not provide Google with any additional revenue -- which leads me to believe that it would solely be used as a 'badge of honor' building their egos.

That's crazy I didn't know google was doing all of this. I agree with you about how google is beginning to buy out all these other programs instead of doing any innovation of their own. It's just an easy way to get some sort of recognition.
Seems as though Google is trying to take over the world! There is something to be said about innovation and new ideas, and I think that Google is starting to stray from that. Google maps and Google world were really great when they came out, but I think Google is losing sight of all the other possibilities that they have. Instead of buying out any type of social media they can, I think they should look internally for improvements and additions.
It seems google wants to own the web. I could understand them buying YouTube. YouTube is used as a visual search engine, if you will. As for wanting to by Twitter--perhaps this is a smart move. Google could integrate Tweets into their search feeds, and use the demographic information as a gold mine. Not sure where this is going, but you don't just foot the bill unless there's something in it for you.
